The fiasco I want to talk about is the World Wide Web, specifically, the advertising-supported, \u201cfree as in beer\u201d constellation of social networks, services, and content that represents so much of the present day web industry. I\u2019ve been thinking of this world, one I\u2019ve worked in for over 20 years, as a fiasco since reading\u00a0a lecture by Maciej Ceg\u0142owski<\/a>, delivered at the Beyond Tellerrand web design conference. \u00a0Ceg\u0142owski is an important and influential programmer and\u00a0an enviably talented writer<\/a>. His talk is a patient explanation of how we\u2019ve ended up with\u00a0<\/span>surveillance as the default<\/a>, if not sole, internet business model.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
